Directory of Traditional Longford Words and Sayings

The Longford Heritage Forum, in partnership with Longford Local Authorities through the Longford Heritage Office, recognises the key importance of language as part of the cultural development of Longford and Ireland as a whole.  Natural changes in language over time are changing more quickly in today’s world, with greater opportunity for travel and the popularity of the internet as well as from overseas television programmes, cinema, books and magazines. As new words and phrases gradually replace older sayings, there is a danger that the traditional phrases used in Longford will be forgotten. To this end, the County Longford Heritage Plan 2004-2009 seeks to protect this unique aspect of our culture and heritage through the provision of this website, which will be developed through contributions from different individuals and groups.

This online dictionary is of words and phrases traditionally used throughout the county of Longford. Many of these words and phrases have their basis in the Irish language, whilst others have their roots in older languages, such as Old Irish, English or Latin.
